      The Topic

Social Security: Making An INFORMED Decision

For a significant majority of beneficiaries, Social Security benefits represent the LARGEST asset individuals have earned and will draw from in retirement. For the average couple, SS benefits represent a net asset value of $1-2 million dollars (this estimate attempts to quantify what someone would need in assets at a 4% rate of withdrawal to generate the monthly income SS benefits provide to retirees.)

Unfortunately, most individuals do not think about Social Security from an investment perspective and they tend to make an emotional decision rather than an INFORMED decision. We encourage individuals to take ownership of this important decision and to develop a plan/strategy. Retirement represents a second or third career in life which will potentially last 20-30+ years. When and how individuals take their SS benefits has a notable impact on their financial success or failure in retirement.

      Learning Objectives

      • Encouraging individuals to think about Social Security a little bit differently. Understand how SS benefits are calculated, how they grow, and the inflation protection these benefits provide throughout retirement
      • Identifying the "key considerations" worth reviewing and personally vetting BEFORE making this important decision and applying for your benefits
      • Learn the right questions to ask and how to take personal ownership in this critical retirement decision. Understanding the eligibility requirements for other potential entitlements within this government program is critical. Some additional entitlements include a spouse's/former spouse's benefits, widow(er) benefits, children benefits, and disabled adult children benefits.

Daniel Hurley, Partner at Social Security Informed

Daniel spent the first 20 years of his career working in the financial services/asset management industry. During this time, his passion for the investment markets combined with a unique ability to personally connect & build business relationships was consistently recognized and rewarded.

After spending the first 6 years working from company headquarters in Boston MA, Daniel was promoted to an external sales role with Evergreen Investments in 2007 and relocated his family to Houston, TX. Following the financial crisis of 2008, Evergreen was sold to Wells Fargo where Daniel retained his position at the new company and continued to excel in his role. In 2008, Daniel would also meet his current business partner (Elaine Simmons) for the very first time. That introduction sparked the beginning of a close friendship, meaningful partnership, and intense mentorship that has continued for the past 16 years.

In June 2021, Daniel submitted his resignation and joined Elaine Simmons as a full partner at Social Security Informed. As joint partners, Elaine and Daniel share a genuine passion in empowering beneficiaries to take ownership of their Social Security benefit decision and ultimately assisting individuals on their personal journey to making an “INFORMED decision!”
