Q: Can membership in a local chapter help me?

A: Absolutely! By joining a local SHRM-affiliated chapter like Texas Bay Area SHRM, you will gain access to:

Networking Opportunities

Create a network with the HR professionals and companies in your community.
Tap into the knowledge of your peers to gain insight on how other local organizations handle various human resource situations, procedures, policies, etc.
Learn about career advancement opportunities you may not otherwise know about.

Take advantage of local professional development learning opportunities that support SHRM’s competency model, throughout every step of your career.
Discover up-to-date information on pending federal and state legislation that may impact your company’s operations.

Professional Development Opportunities

Leadership skills development opportunities include taking on a volunteer leadership role in your local chapter.
You will have the opportunity to earn professional development credits (PDCs) for attending chapter programming approved for SHRM-CP and SHRM‑SCP recertification.

Q: As a national SHRM member, am I automatically a member of a local SHRM-affiliated chapter?

A: No. National SHRM membership is separate from membership in your local chapter. Each chapter has its own membership application process and dues structure. To become a member of your local chapter, you will need to apply for membership directly with that particular chapter.

Q: As a member of my local SHRM-affiliated chapter, am I automatically a national SHRM member?

A: No. To learn more about the benefits of national SHRM membership and how to join, visit the SHRM website directly.

Q: Can I belong to more than one SHRM-affiliated chapter?

A: Yes. You can belong to as many chapters as you desire, but one of the local chapters will be considered your “primary chapter” to receive financial support from SHRM. Bottom line, becoming a member of SHRM and a local chapter is a winning combination!

MEMBERSHIP TYPES

Professional Members

Professional membership shall be limited to those individuals who are engaged as one or more of the following:

practitioners of human resource management at the exempt level for at least three years;
hold an HR certification recognized by SHRM;
faculty members holding an assistant, associate or full professor rank in human resource management or any of its specialized functions at an accredited college or university and have at least three years of experience at this level of teaching;
full-time consultants with at least three years’ experience practicing in the field of human resource management; and/or
full-time attorneys with at least three years’ experience in counseling and advising clients on matters relating to the human resource profession.

Professional members may vote and hold office in the chapter.

Associate Members

Individuals in non-exempt human resource management positions as well as those individuals who do not meet the qualifications of the other classes of membership, but who demonstrate a bona fide interest in human resource management and the mission of the Chapter.

Associate members may not vote or hold office in the Chapter unless vetted through the Chapter nominating process and approved by the Officers.

Student Members

Individuals who are enrolled either as full-time or part-time students, at freshman standing or higher;

enrolled in the equivalent of at least six (6) credit hours;
enrolled in a four-year or graduate institution and/or a consortium of these or a two-year community college with a matriculation agreement between it and a four-year college or university which provides for automatic acceptance of the community college students into the four-year college or university;
able to provide verification of a demonstrated emphasis in human resource management subjects, and
able to provide verification of the college or university's human resources or related degree program.

Student members may not vote or hold office in the Chapter.

Associate - Non-SHRM Member - $60.00 (USD) Subscription period: 1 year No automatically recurring payments Individuals in non-exempt human resource management positions as well as those individuals who do not meet the qualifications of the other classes of membership, but who demonstrate a bonafide interest in human resource management and the mission of the Chapter.

Associate - SHRM Member - $50.00 (USD) Subscription period: 1 year No automatically recurring payments You are a current National SHRM member in good standing.

Individuals in non-exempt human resource management positions as well as those individuals who do not meet the qualifications of the other classes of membership, but who demonstrate a bonafide interest in human resource management and the mission of the Chapter.
