The Topic:


The state of diversity, equity, and inclusion is in flux and many HR professionals are unaware of how this impacts their workforce. This workshop will review where DEI stands today in our workforce, education, and society. It highlights a 20 year historical perspective that connects to the challenges DEI is facing today. The presentation is designed to help participants identify promising strategies for navigating the complexities of DEI.

Objectives

  • Understand diversity, equity, and inclusion in the context of today's changing workforce
  • Acknowledge how laws, sentiments, and initiatives will impact DEI
  • Identify future workforce needs as DEI continues to encounter challenges and misunderstandings

  • 12:00-1:00 Speaker Presentation, followed by Q&A

Re-certification credits are available for this event (1 SHRM PDC; 1 hour HRCI) and will be shared with attendees after the meeting.

    About the Speaker:

    Jobi Martinez, Ph.D., possesses over 20 years of experience in leading, developing, and advising diversity, inclusion, equity, access, and justice initiatives. Prior to joining Harris Health System, Dr. Martinez served as the Executive Director of the Racial Justice Institute and as an Executive Consultant for EPIC Collaborative Advisors and the National Diversity Council. In these roles, Dr. Martinez developed curriculum, resources, trainings, and certifications for companies, organizations, communities, and individuals engaged diversity, equity, or inclusion work. Her work included assisting non-profit organizations, colleges and universities, and Fortune 500 companies. 

    Prior to these roles and activities, Dr. Martinez served in various diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) roles in higher education; specifically at the University of Houston-Downtown and Texas Tech University (TTU). At TTU, she served as the Senior Managing Director of the Division of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement. 

    During her time in higher education, she also served as the Vice-President and President of the Big 12 Chapter of Diversity Officers in Higher Education and founding member of the Texas Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education. Dr. Martinez was recognized and nominated for these leadership positions because of her innovative leadership and work in the DEI space. In 2018 and 2019, she was recognized as a National Thought Leader for her work and research in DEI strategic communication and strategic management. 

    Dr. Martinez holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations, a Master’s in Public Administration, and a Ph.D. in Media and Communication with an emphasis in DEI strategic communication. Dr. Martinez was born and raised in Muleshoe, Texas.
